Type Locality: Madagascar, Fianarantsoa Prov., 30 mi (48 km) S Fianarantsoa, near Vinanitelo.
Vernacular Names: Tanala Tufted-tailed Rat.
Distribution: Middle elevations in humid forest, 775-1625 m, from Northern Highlands to the S Anosyenne Mountains, E Madagascar.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Distribution overlaps that of its morphologically similar congener E. webbi at lower elevations. Geographic variation evaluated by Carleton and Goodman (1998).
