Type locality

Lake Biwa, eastern side of the southern part of the north basin, locality 35 (35 ° 14922.20N; 135 ° 58913.70E), depth 25 m, substrate poorly sorted mud, sand, gravel and organic detritus.

Derivation of name

Named after Ichiro Okubo in recognition of his work on Japanese ostracods. Diagnosis

Posterior and anterior margins of female carapace almost equally rounded; male with slightly more inflated posterior compared with anterior. Maximum height marked by slight dorsal hump at posterior third in male, slightly more posterior in female. Male L5 palps relatively small, both hooked shaped, but right palp more

inflated than left. Hp body triangular with rounded, tongue-shaped a lobe. FRO without posterior projection.

Description

Male carapace length 816–873 Mm, height 402–423 Mm, H/L50.48–0.49, female length 775–789 Mm, height 345–366 Mm, H/L50.45–0.46. Male carapace with curved dorsal margin, maximum height at posterior third, marked by slight dorsal hump, posterior and anterior margins equally rounded. Ventral margin slightly concave. Female smaller than male. Dorsal view of female with anterior margin slightly more pointed than posterior margin, maximum width approximately at mid-length. Calcified inner lamella wide anteriorly, narrower posteriorly. Female left valve with small, but well-defined anterodorsal flap, and ill-defined, very shallow posterodorsal flap. Surface of valves smooth, colour white.

An1 with eight segments, first two of which are fused together forming one large movable article, supporting two setae on dorsal edge and two long ventral–apical setae. Third segment wider than long with seta on dorsal–apical corner. Fourth segment quadrate with dorsal–apical seta. Fifth and sixth segments each with two long dorsal–apical setae and one short ventral–apical seta. Seventh segment with three long and one short apical setae. Seventh segment with two long and one short setae, and aesthetasc ya.

An2 with long and slender Y aesthetasc. Male with long and slender t2 and t 3 male setae with triangular tips. Claw G 1 in male short, less than half the length of G2. Claw Gm just over half the length of GM. Female with claw G2 half the length of claw G1, claw Gm just over half the length of GM.

Md palp second segment with 3+1+beta setae.

L 5 male palps asymmetrical and relatively small. Both palps hook-shaped, right palp more inflated than left.

L6 with five segments, first segment with relatively long d1 seta. Seta e of second segment and seta f of third segment equal in length. Seta g of fourth segment long. Claw of final segment slender, h1 seta approximately four times length of h3 seta.

L7 with five segments. First segment with short d1 seta and long dp seta. Fourth segment with long g seta. Final segment with sub-equal h2 and h3 setae and short h1 seta.

UR ramus slightly curved, seta Sp twice as long as Sa. Claw Gp approximately 75% length of Ga.

Hp body an elongated triangle in shape with rounded, tongue-shaped a lobe. m process not observed.

FRO with angular corner anteriorly, rounded posteriorly, lacking posterior projection.

Remarks

An m process in the hemipenis was not observed, and is possibly reduced or missing.

In carapace shape this species is most similar to Fabaeformiscandona fabella (Nüchterlein, 1969) but F. fabella is less elongate and has different shaped hemipenes. Fabaeformiscandona okuboi sp. nov. was recovered from depths ranging from 2 to 25 m, on muddy sand through to poorly sorted sands and gravels. Localities 35 and 42 in Figure 1 View Figure 1 .
