Ferrissia sp.

We found Ferrissia on St. Thomas in container water gardens from Tillet Gardens and in artificial impoundments on Mahogany Run ghut and a ghut near Donoe Road. Ferrissia has been reported from the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and from Guadeloupe Island in the Caribbean ( Ferguson and Richards 1963; Basch 1963; Smith and Brousseau 1996); however, species of Ferrissia are not separable morphologically ( Walthers 2008), but the ecology of where our material was found (permanent lentic habitats) suggests that they may be F. fragilis . The general gestalt agrees with this tentative determination ( Walthers 2008). Our material are the first records from St. Thomas, although the material reported by Smith and Brousseau (1996) from St. John, is probably the same taxon.
