Diagnosis. Garra nujiangensis can be easily distinguished from congeners by the absence of the transverse lobe and proboscis. It can be further distinguished from congeners having a poor transverse lobe or no proboscis in the Irrawaddy River and Salween River basins by the combination of the following characters: no barbels (vs. two pairs of barbels in G. abhoyai , G. chakpiensis , G. nambulica , G. namyaensis , G. notata , G. poecilura , G. paralissorhynchus , G. spilota , G. tengchongensis , and G. ukhrulensis ); body and all fins without bands or marks (vs. caudal fin with W-shaped marks in G. abhoyai , G. nambulica , G. namyaensis , and G. poecilura ; a black band on the distal margin of the dorsal fin in G. namyaensis , G. poecilura , and G. tengchongensis ).

Distribution. This species is only found in the Nu-jiang (the upper Salween River) basin, including some branches of the Salween River in west Yunnan, China.
