This species was mentioned erroneously twice as occurring in the Red Sea ( Smith, 1958; Frøiland, 1972). It is a junior synonym of V. trachinoides (Cuvier, 1829) (S. Poss, pers. comm.; Eschmeyer & Fricke, 2009)
