Type species Gamasoides spiniger Oudemans 1936 , by original designation.

Diagnosis of genus

Female with schizodorsal shield or completely divided dorsal shield; opisthogastric (rarely hologastric) shield with fewer than 18 pairs of setae; genital shield of female ­ shaped, with a single anterior point; setae al 1 and al 2 on palp genu of deutonymphs and adults spatulate; corniculi short, not extending to anterior margin of palp femur; tritosternum of male absent or rudimentary; femur II of deutonymph with one or two heavy spinelike ventral setae mounted on cuticular protrusions.

The complex nomenclatural history of the genus and its type species have been reviewed by Strenzke (1951) and Holzmann (1969). Detailed descriptions of the type species G. spiniger are given by Micherdzinski (1969) and Hyatt (1980).
