Scutops chapmani ( Curran, 1934) View in CoL

( Figs 1–2 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 , 19A View FIGURE 19 , 21 View FIGURE 21 )

Panamenia chapmani Curran, 1934: 323 View in CoL ( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 and 9 View FIGURE 9 ).

Scutops chapmani View in CoL ; Sturtevant, 1954: 556; Prado, 1975: 2 (Neotropical catalog); Mathis & Rung, 2011: 358 (world catalog).

Diagnosis. Frons yellow with a median brown large spot, in the shape of an inverted triangle, occupying the whole dorsal portion of the frons; face pale yellow with distal margin sub-triangular in dorsal view; lateral longitudinal band with silver pruinescence on occiput extended to gena; scutum brown with a quadrangular whitish yellow stripe occupying posterior half of scutum.

Redescription. Body: 4.6 mm; wing: 3.5 mm. Head ( Figs 1A–B View FIGURE 1 ). Frons yellow with a median brown spot in the shape of an inverted triangle, extending from anterior to posterior margin of frons; fronto-orbital setulae sparse, short, thin, and brown. Face yellow; dorsal portion higher than wide, flat dorsally with distal margin sub-triangular in dorsal view. Gena and postgena yellow; postgena with thin, brown setae; gena with short but conspicuous brown setae. Occiput with a series of short, thin, brown setae; silver pruinescent band adjacent to posterior margin of eye extended to gena. Antenna yellow; pedicel with five dorsal, robust, brown setae; arista with ten dorsal and four ventral branches. Buccal pieces brown except palpus yellow basally and dark brown apically. Thorax ( Figs 1A, C View FIGURE 1 ). Scutum brown with a broad whitish yellow quadrangular stripe occupying the posterior half of scutum, as wide as scutellum; postpronotal lobe whitish yellow with dense silvery pruinescence; notopleuron and supra-alar area yellow, with dense pale yellow pruinescence; scutellum same color of the scutal stripe with lateral margin brown, with the apex elevated at an angle of about 30º; subscutellum brown; pleura yellow except by a brown spot on katepisternum. Setae: anterior dorsocentral postsutural seta about 2/3 of the posterior seta; anterior katepisternal seta 3/5 the length of the posterior seta; distal scutellar seta 3/4 the length of basal seta. Legs ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ). Yellow except coxae brown; fore femur with pale brown base; mid and hind femora with a brown spot on anteroventral surface; tibiae with a basal complete and an apical incomplete dark brown ring. Forefemur with posteroventral robust black setae. Wing ( Fig. 19A View FIGURE 19 ) pale brown, yellow basally, including the basal portion of costal and br cells; transversal preapical hyaline band complete; inconspicuous hyaline spot at apical margin, in the section R 4+5 –M 1. Halter yellow. Abdomen ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ). Tergites and sternites brown. Terminalia ( Figs 2A–C View FIGURE 2 ): epandrium wider than high in posterodorsal view; cercus ellipsoid in posterodorsal view; postgonite large, almost quadrangular in lateral view; hypandrium + phallapodeme extended anteriorly, long and slender in lateral view; phallus long and very slender, twice the length of hypandrium + phallapodeme, membranous, sclerotized laterally; ejaculatory apodeme with distal margin rounded.

Female. Similar to male. Terminalia ( Fig. 2D View FIGURE 2 ): tergite and sternite 7 forming a ring slightly flattened ventrally in posterior view; sternite 8 in inverted triangle shape with rounded sides and dorsal margin slightly concave; cercus ellipsoid in posterior view.

Locality records: Costa Rica (Alajuela and San José) and Panamá (Colón) ( Fig. 21 View FIGURE 21 ) .

L. Rounds), A. L. Melander Collection, 1961, (no data) 1 male ( NMNH) GoogleMaps . PANAMÁ, [Colón], Canal Zone, Barro Colorado Island [9°09′20.3″N 79°50′59.1″W], 21.iv.1956, (Carl W. e Marian E) 1 male ( NMNH) GoogleMaps ; [Panamá], Alhajuelo [9°13′22.6″N 79°34′47.1″W], 5.v.[19]11, (August Busck), 1 male ( NMNH) GoogleMaps .

Comments: The type was not found in the institution cited by the author and is probably lost. Our redescription was based on a male specimen from the same locality as the holotype, Canal Zone, Barro Colorado Island ( Panama). Scutops chapmani can be easily distinguished from the other species of Scutops by the large brown triangular spot on the frons, pale yellow quadrangular stripe occupying the posterior half of scutum, and the complete hyaline transversal preapical band in the wing.
