Phyllomya takanoi Mesnil, 1970: 119 View in CoL (as Phyllomyia ). Holotype male (CNC, examined). Type locality: Japan, Hokkaido, Nukabira.

Phyllomya takanoi: Herting 1984: 156 View in CoL (Palearctic catalog); Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 388 (Palearctic catalog); Richter 2004: 368 (tachinids of Russian Far East); Shima 2014: 837 (Japanese catalog); Shima & Hara 2016: 5 (tachinids of Saitama Prefecture).

Diagnosis. Body length: 6.4–11.1 mm. Head dichoptic; no proclinate orbital setae in male, 2 in female; arista short plumose; whitish hairs on fronto-orbital plate, parafacial, pleural region of thorax, coxae, ventroproximal portion of femora, 1st abdominal sternite and venter of syntergite 1+2; no acrostichal setae or only 1 fine presutural seta; mid tibia with 2 anterodorsal setae; hind tibia with 3 preapical dorsal setae; male fore claws and pulvilli as long as 5th tarsomere; abdominal syntergite 1+2 without median discal setae.

Redescription of terminalia. Male: Sixth tergite rather long, narrowly divided into 2 hemitergites, without hairs; surstylus narrow in lateral view, narrowed to a weakly pointed apex, with several hairs on dorsal portion; cerci in dorsal view fused basally and with median longitudinal suture obliterated along basal 1/4–1/3, rather slender, evenly narrowed to apex, in lateral view weakly constricted at basal 1/3, then weakly curved ventrally; pregonite flat; postgonite extending well beyond apex of epiphallus; dorsal sclerite of distiphallus weakly curved dorsally at apex, distal membranous portion nearly as long as dorsal sclerite. Female: Sixth tergite strongly concave middorsally on anterior margin and narrowly divided into hemitergites, with several long marginal setae; 6th sternite with short fine pale yellowish hairs mixed with black hairs on posterior portion; 7th tergite divided into long ovate hemitergites, with a few hairs on marginal portion; 7th sternite with short, fine, whitish hairs mixed with black ones on posterior portion; 8th hemitergite rather long, broadly fused with hypoproct on median portion and curved anteriorly below middle; 8th sternite longer than 6th.

Description of first instar larva. Body length 0.95–1.00 mm; cephaloskeleton rather narrow on apical 1/2, dorsal margin weakly pointed near middle in lateral view; 2nd thoracic segment with 4–5 anterodorsal rows of fine spinules; 2nd to 6th abdominal segments each with 4–5 posteroventral rows of short fine spinules, without anterodorsal spinules, 7th segment with weak posterior rows of spinules.

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu).

Remarks. Shima (1988, fig. 31) illustrated the male cerci as bearing distinct mid-dorsal suture along the dorsal surface, but this is erroneous. The cerci are fused along the basal 1/2 and the mid-dorsal longitudinal suture is obliterated there.
