Orionis ecuadoriensis Shaw & Shimbori sp. nov.

Female. Body length 4.3 mm; ovipositor length 2.0 mm.
Head. Flagellum with 20 segments; malar space 0.33 × basal width of mandible; minute ocular setae present; face densely setose, especially near eyes and antennal sockets; frons mostly smooth; in dorsal view temples almost parallel sided behind eyes then tapering at middle, 0.7 × longer than eyes.
Mesosoma. Pronotum rugose anteriorly, mostly smooth and highly polished laterally, with rugose pronotal groove; mesonotum with median lobe densely setose, lateral lobes mostly bare, with longer setae over its border, median lobe strongly punctate anteriorly, posteriorly depressed and strongly rugulose with longitudinal carina indicated but obscured by rugosity; notauli crenulate; scutellar sulcus superficially rugose, with three carina; mesopleuron mostly setose but bare centrally, mostly polished except for anterior region and subalar sulcus rugose, and crenulate-rugose sternaulus; propodeum areolate-rugose to rugulose anteriorly; dorsal face of propodeum gently curved into posterior face, in lateral view the outline of propodeum not forming an angle near 90°; median depression of propodeum relatively shallow.
Wings. Fore wing: m-cu clearly distad to 2RS; R1 1.1 × length of stigma. Hind wing cu-a:1M:r-m = 12:17:14
Metasoma. Smooth. Length of petiole 0.8 × length of mesosoma; petiole about 4.5 × longer than its apical width; apical width of petiole 3 × its narrowest subbasal width; ovipositor about 2 × longer than petiole.
Color. Head, mesosoma and petiole black; antenna dark brown; mandibles, labial and maxillary palpi yellowish-brown; metasomal terga beyond petiole dark brown; ovipositor yellow with sheaths dark brown; fore and mid coxa and all trochanters whitish yellow, fore trochantellus and femur honey yellow, fore tibia and tarsi light brown, remainder of mid and hind legs dark brown, except base of hind tibia white. Wings weakly tinged brown, veins dark brown basally and pale brown apically, stigma dark brown with, pterostigma and basal tip of stigma whitish yellow.

Biology. Unknown.
Comments. This new species closely resembles Orionis eximius . The color pattern is mostly identical except for the mandibles being pale lime-yellow in O. eximius , compared with honey yellow in O. ecuadoriensis . Head shape is distinctive in both species ( Figs. 9, 12 View FIGURES 8 – 14 , 16, 17, 20 View FIGURES 15 – 22 ): in dorsal view the temples of O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov. are larger and not directly receding behind eyes as in O. eximius . The frons is mostly smooth in O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov. vs. rugose in O. eximius . The dorsal and the posterior faces of the propodeum are horizontal and vertical in lateral view in O. eximius , with the posterior face broadly hollowed out medially. In O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov., the two faces are less abruptly angled, forming a gently curved outline in lateral view, the posterior surface is not vertical and is only very shallowly hollowed out. Orionis ecuadoriensis sp. nov. has the vein m-cu arising clearly distad to vein 2RS, compared with vein m-cu interstitial or shortly basad to vein 2RS in O. eximius . O. eximius females have 21–22 flagellomeres, compared with 20 in O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov. The longitudinal keel of the mesoscutum is absent in O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov., as opposed to present, although sometimes obscured by rugosity, in O. eximius . The scutellar furrow in O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov. is rugose with one median carina evident, compared with smooth with one carina in O. brasiliensis sp. nov. and O. masoni and smooth with three carinae in O. eximius . Vein cu-a of the hind wing is 0.8 × the length of vein r-m in O. ecuadoriensis sp. nov., compared with slightly longer in O. eximius .

Distribution. Known only from type locality in Napo, Ecuador.
Etymology. The new species named after the country where it was collected.
