Diagnosis: This highly variable species is distinguished from all other Australasian Micronectidae by the form of the male genitalia ( Figs. 45d–h View FIGURE 45 ). The combination of the prothoracic lobe ( Fig. 44a View FIGURE 44 ), metaxyphus ( Fig. 44b View FIGURE 44 ), and general facies will permit separation of females. Hemelytral coloration varies from light brown with distinct markings, to dark brown with reduced markings ( Figs. 41c–e View FIGURE 41 , 42a–b View FIGURE 42 , 43a–d View FIGURE 43 ). The darker form of the species seems more prominent in south and eastern Australia (South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania).

Size: ( Table 14). Brachypterous form: 2.74–3.44. Macropterous form: 3.18–3.62. Complete measurement data for 20 specimens of M. annae are included in Table 14.

Derivation of specific epithet: Kirkaldy probably named the species for his wife, Annie K. Brenham (see Dolling 1991 for short biography of Kirkaldy).

Notes on type material: The whereabouts of the type material are unknown. Kirkaldy noted in the original description (1905: 263) “my collection”, indicating he retained the type ( Dolling 1991). The type was not located in BPBM or SEMC holdings.

I was able to examine Hale’s (1922) types of Micronecta batilla from SAMA, confirming Wróblewski’s synonymy with M. annae . Owing to the inability to locate Kirkaldy’s holotype of M. annae , I have illustrated Hale’s holotype of M. batilla for comparative purposes. Holotype (♂) and allotype (♀) on point card ( Fig. 41a–c View FIGURE 41 ): “Macclesfield [Mt. Lofty Ranges], South Australia. H. M. Hale”. Pin bearing small handwritten label: “Type” and large handwritten label ( Fig. 41b View FIGURE 41 ): “ Micronecta batilla Hale , South Australia.” The number “I15187” handwritten in upper right-hand corner of label. “Type” handwritten in red ink, along right side of label. On a separate pin, the paratype series consists of 16 specimens glued on a rectangular point card and labeled as “Co-Type” on pink label, same data as above; larger label beneath, handwritten and bearing “ Micronecta batilla Hale ,” “ Paratype ” printed in red along right margin of label.

At present, I decline designating a neotype of M. annae , as all possible locations of Kirkaldy’s type have not been exhausted. Moreover, the present definition of M. annae seems quite clear collectively from Kirkaldy’s (1905) description, Wróblewski’s (1970) subsequent redescription and synonymy of M. batilla , and further study of specimens from this research. In the interim, Hale’s type of M. batilla = M. annae , which agrees well with Kirkaldy’s original description, serves as proxy for the concept of M. annae .

Distribution and Habitat: AUSTRALIA: [widespread]: Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia. A very common species in Australia, collected in a variety of aquatic habitats, as well as commonly taken at lights. So far, not known from Northern Territory.

Discussion: Micronecta annae is a widespread, highly variable species occurring throughout continental Australia. Much of the confusion surrounding the species and defining the variability seen, is owed to Kirkaldy’s short, imprecise original description and the whereabouts of the type specimen. Further, neither Hale (1922) or Chen (1965) treated the species, only repeating Kirkaldy’s original description. At that time, Hale described M. batilla (= M. annae ) and made no additional comments on the identity of M. annae . In her investigation, Chen (1965) recognized Hale’s (1922) M. batilla and commented that it was impossible to recognize M. annae based on Kirkaldy’s description.

Wróblewski (1970) was the first to redescribe M. annae , based on examination of Kirkaldy’s description, study of Hale’s M. batilla , and additional specimens of M. annae . He provided detailed figures of the species, synonymized M. batilla and M. erato with M. annae , and provided brief comments on M. annae var. pallida (= M. annae ). At the same time, he described M. annae illiesi from the limited material he had available (2♂, 17♀♀), noting the similarities of his new subspecies with M. annae . Wróblewski (1977) later amended his original description based on a much larger collection of material from Victoria and Tasmania. There he noted the original metrics for M. illiesi were less divergent than first reported. I was able to examine most of the material the redescription was based on ( Wróblewski 1977: 684) and have identified all of it as M. annae .

I have examined all characters discussed by Wróblewski (1970, 1972b) as diagnostic for M. annae illiesi and regard these as within the variation of the species. These characters include hemelytral patterning, which is highly variable (see above), the synthlipsis (interocular space vs. eye width), which varies greatly within and among short and long winged forms ( Table 14), and the metaxyphus, sternal process of abdominal segment VII, and free lobe abdominal tergite VIII, which are variable in numerous samples examined from across Australia. Further, microscopy examination of the male genitalia (both light and scanning electron microscopy) reveals that rotation of the pygophore produces paramere morphology seen in illustrations for both M. annae and M. illiesi ( Figs. 45d–h View FIGURE 45 ).

Based on my morphology examination of over 6,000 specimens of M. annae and more than 3,500 specimens of material previously determined as M. illiesi , I herein propose synonymy of M. annae . and M. illiesi . All differences described previously with morphology ( Wróblewski 1970, 1977) are regarded as natural variation within the species. Further study using molecular markers (e.g., mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I) across populations will be useful for analyzing any evidence of divergence within M. annae .

Micronecta concordia and M. dixonia are also herein synonymized with M. annae . I examined the type specimens for both of these at MVMA and found these morphologically identical with M. annae . King (1997) based his description of both species nearly entirely on acoustic signals he recorded from (and nearby) each type locality. Sound recordings of both species were made within a restricted geographical area, often only from one large pond, which would seemingly limit any analysis of variation in mating calls and chorusing of Micronecta species discussed by King (1997, 1999a, 1999b, 1999c). Additional character study of bioacoustics and the use of molecular markers and ecology, would prove useful for determination of character states beyond morphology.
