Description of Male. Integument black, opaque; prothorax from uniformly black to uniformly reddish. Frons as long as broad, clothed with yellowish white pubescence. Genae ⅔ as long as lower eye lobes. Antennae exceeding elytral apices by two segments; scape densely punctoreticulate; segments 3–11 densely micropubescent, 3–5 sparsely setose beneath; segments 5–11 subequal, little longer than 3. Pronotum medially carinate at apical half; antemedian gibbosities subrounded and proximate, the basal ones separated, transverse and subacuminate; surface with coarse, deep punctures, denser on disk. Sides of prothorax coarsely, deeply punctate. Prosternum microcorrugate, densely clothed with whitish pubescence, obscuring integument; sexual punctation formed by a subround ed, subglabrous, coarsely punctate patch on each side in front of coxae. Meso and metasterna densely whitish pubescent. Metasternum with sparse, coarse punctures on disk. Scutellum narrow, triangular. Elytra somewhat shortened, about 2.3 times as long as the width across humeri, the dorsal costae prominent; basal half coarsely, subseriately punctate, the punctures becoming finer, shallower and obscured by pubescence from beyond middle to apex; dark vittae narrow; pubescence reaching scutellum. Epipleuron coarsely punctocorrugate, strongly asperate. Metafemora exceeding elytral apices by about ⅔ of the club length. Tibiae somewhat quadrangular, longitudinally grooved on four sides. Urosternites microcorrugate, densely clothed with very short, whitish pubescence. Urosternite 5 attenuate apically, rounded at apex.

Female. Antennae as long as body or exceeding elytral apices by almost two segments. Prosternum with coarse, irregularly dense punctures, sparsely yellowish brown pubescent. Metafemora exceeding elytral apices by half club length. Meso and metasterna subglabrous.

Measurements, in mm, male/ female: total length, 8.7–11.7/9.5–12.5; prothorax length, 1.5–2.2/1.8–2.5; prothorax width, 1.7–2.5/2.0–2.7; elytral length, 5.7–8.2/6.5–8.5; humeral width, 2.0–3.0/2.3–3.2.

Types. The types of Cerambyx tenebricosus Olivier (1790) , Callidium tenebrosum Fabricius (1792) , and Callichroma aterrima Germar (1824) were not examined. Cerambyx tenebricosus was described from Cayenne, French Guiana. About Callidium tenebrosum, Zimsen (1964:178) mentioned: ‘‘3022. Callidium tenebrosum Ent Syst , p. 322.18 Cayennae Mus. Dom. Olivier (Syst. El., II, p. 337).’’ So, it is possible that Fabricius (1792) based on specimens, or even on the same specimen, of Olivier’s Collection. The examples were not located. Germar (1824) mentioned only ‘‘Brasilia’’ as the type locality of C. aterrima and the type specimen was not located either. The holotype of Listroptera angulata White (1855) , described from Para´, Brazil, deposited in the BMNH, was studied by means of color slides, allowing to corroborate the synonymy proposed by Aurivillius (1912).

Remarks. Listroptera tenebricosa is similar to L. carbonaria , by the allblack color, the tuberculate prothorax, the quadrituberculate pronotum and the elytra clothed with whitish pubescence. They differ mainly in the shape of the elytra and the legs. In L. tenebricosa the elytra are proportionally shorter and broad, with the dorsal costae prominent, and the epipleura strongly asperate; also, the punctation is coarse, deep and seriate at basal half and the pubescence reach the scutellum, leaving a narrow black vitta on each elytron. The metafemora are stout, exceeding the elytra by the club length, and the clubs are enlarged; the metatibiae are quadrangular and furrowed on four sides. Besides, the antennal segments 5–11 are subequal in length.

This species is widely distributed from Mexico to Argentina and Uruguay. Host plants are recorded as Acacia farnesiana Wild. (Mimosaceae) ( Ruffinelli 1967; Silva et al. 1968) and Zanthoxylum rhoifolium Lamarck (Rutaceae) (Tavakilian in Hequet 1996; Tavakilian et al. 1997). According to Tavakilian in Hequet (1996) the adults are mimetics of Bibionidae (Diptera) . Immatures stages are not known.
