Distribution: North Pacific: temperate waters.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Data Deficient.

Discussion: Reviewed by J. G. Mead (1989 c). Very closely related to bowdoini . Orr believed that this species was synonymous with M. stejnegeri (see Mead et al., 1982). Hubbs (1946) first identified the holotype of this species as M. bowdoini .
