Hemicladus thomsonii Buquet, 1857 View in CoL

( Figs 35–42 View FIGURES 35–42 )

Hemicladus thomsonii Buquet, 1857: 330 View in CoL .

According to Buquet (1857), the elytra in H. thomsonii are slightly pubescent, reddish-brown or brick red, and the underside of the body is covered with grayish pubescence. Tavakilian et al. (2010) reported: “integument of the elytra reddish, with very sparse pubescence. The specimens of H. thomsonii deposited at MZSP have the elytra reddish-brown or more yellowish-brown, but the concentration of the pubescence is variable: it may be very sparse, as in the lectotype (see Bezark 2018), or distinctly denser. The color of the elytral pubescence is mostly reddish-brown or yellowish- brown, but it is slightly violaceous in one specimen. In this latter specimen ( Figs 35–38 View FIGURES 35–42 ), the elytra are also irregularly tinted with violaceous. In some specimens from the MZSP collection, the base of the elytra has the pubescence lighter than on remaining surface.

Although Buquet (1857) and Tavakilian et al. (2010) did not mention the color of the elytral pubescence, it appears to be somewhat yellowish-brown in the lectotype. We examined a specimen ( Figs 39–42 View FIGURES 35–42 ) from Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul) with the elytra mostly dark with moderately dense violaceous pubescence, except the basal area with yellowish-white pubescence. Furthermore, the ventral pubescence is also mostly violaceous, and not grayish ( Buquet 1857) or yellowish-brown as in nearly all specimens examined. Accordingly, the elytral color, as well the concentration and color of the elytral pubescence and the color of the ventral pubescence is noticeably variable in H. thomsonii .

Despite these variations found in the specimen from Mato Grosso do Sul, the key from Tavakilian et al. (2010) also leads to H. thomsonii , and it was not possible to find a reliable difference separating this specimen from the other specimens of the examined species.
