Rhipidomys couesi J. A. Allen and Chapman 1893 View in CoL , Bull. Am. Mus . Nat. Hist., 5: 214.
Type Locality: Trinidad, 7 mi (11 km) SE Princes Town and 12 mi (19 km) N of the southern coast.
Vernacular Names: Coues' Rhipidomys.
Synonyms: Rhipidomys cumananus Thomas 1900 .
Distribution: Moist lowland forest that follows an arc from Trinidad, through N and WC Venezuela, to C Colombia (Meta).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: R. leucodactylus section sensu Tribe (1996). Cabrera (1961) identified couesi as a subspecies of R. sclateri . As emphasized by its original describer Thomas (1887 b), sclateri closely resembles Peruvian R. leucodactylus , and, in both Venezuela (see Handley, 1976) and Perú, R. couesi and R. leucodactylus are morphologically distinct.
