Catops Paykull, 1798: 342  . Type species: Catops sericeus  of Paykull, 1798 (not proposed as new, referred to Tritoma sericea Fabricius, 1787  but misidentified (e.g., Sherborn, 1902) (= Helops fuscus Panzer  ) ( ICZN 1999: Art. 69.2.4) (4 species in original description, 2 as “new” [but not stated as such]— sericeus Fabricius  [ Tritoma  ], morio Fabricius [ Tritoma  ], elongatus, brevicornis); des. in Jeannel, 1922: 44 (not stated as taxonomic change, as C. sericeus Payk.  [sic], which was stated as senior synonym of C. fuscus Panzer  ); Helops fuscus Panzer  des. [not valid] in Thomson, 1859: 59 (as “ C. fuscus  ”; not stated as taxonomic novelty; the species was not listed in original description; it is the senior synonym of the first species listed, but was not stated as such); Helops fuscus Panzer  listed as type species (in error) in Hatch, 1928: 188.

Distribution: Mexico (2 species) and 145 spp. Holarctic and Borneo.
