Leiodes Latreille, 1797: 22 View in CoL (no species included). Type species: Sphaeridium ferrugineum Fabricius (subsequent monotypy by Latreille, 1802: 163). Note: Originally no spp. included.

Note 1: Misidentified as Anisotoma Fabricius View in CoL [sic] in Schmidt, 1841: 143 (misidentification corrected by Reitter, 1884: 96; see discussion in Baranowski, 1993: 6).

= Liodes Erichson, 1845: 87 (unjustified emendation of Leiodes Latreille View in CoL ; used in misidentified sense of Schmidt, 1841 (= Anisotoma View in CoL )). Note: First used in a correctly identified sense by Reitter, 1884: 96.

Note: Revised in Daffner, 1983 (Palaearctic) and Baranowski, 1993 (North and Central American species).

Key: to Neotropical species in Baranowski, 1993: 26 [and to North American species on p. 19].

Distribution: 233 species—Holarctic, Afrotropical, northern Neotropical.

Biology: Adults and larvae probably feeding on subterranean fungi ( Newton, 1984).
