Distribution: Inhabiting tropical mountainous rainforest of Mindanao (the Philippines) between above 1100 m above sea level: known from Davao Region (Marilog District).

Diagnosis. The species can easily be distinguished from other species of the genus Spartolus by its unique coloration: pronotum is mostly yellow, except for the black median part of dorsum, black infrascapular area, and black stripe on paranota. Median part of the external area of the hind femora is black, while rest of the femora are yellow. Internal part of hind femora is black. Fore and mid femora, tibiae and tarsi are predominantly yellow. Head is yellow, with black face. Specimens described as S. minax (Walker, 1871) has whole dorsum yellow, while S. tricostatus Bolívar, 1887 , has black dorsum, with the middle part being yellow. There is a chance that all three species S. minax , S. tricostatus , and S. pugionatus represent synonyms of each other. This case could be true if all of the color varieties do not represent specific differences. In that case, Spartolus minax is the oldest name and has nomenclatural priority.
