Notes
Heteroplacidium compactum is widely distributed worldwide. It was previously reported from Utah as Catapyrenium compactum (A. Massal.) R. Sant. by St. Clair et al. (1991). This lichen begins as a parasite on other lichens, and then grows independently. Fig. 20 shows our specimen growing partly scattered among and likely parasitic on Caloplaca trachyphylla .
