status

Myrica aspleniifolia Linnaeus  , Species Plantarum 2: 1024. 1753.

"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 7238.

Basionym of: Liquidambar aspleniifolia (L.) L. (1763)  .

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 100, f. 7. 1691; Almag. Bot.: 260. 1696 - Voucher: Herb. Sloane97: 13; 101: 49 (BM-SL); [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 100, f. 6. 1691; Almag. Bot.: 260. 1696 - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 97: 13; 101: 49 (BM-SL).

Current name: Comptonia peregrina (L.) J.M. Coult.  ( Myricaceae  ).

Note: Specific epithet spelled “asplenifolia” in the protologue.

See discussion by Fernald (in Rhodora 40: 411, pl. 514, f. 1, 2. 1938) who, however, does not formally choose a type. Reveal & al. in Huntia 7: 223. 1987) did designate " Clayton 684" (BM) as lectotype but no such specimen can be traced and this statement appears to be an error. The name consequently remains untypified.
