Diagnosis. Antenna yellow, postpedicel about 2.8 times as long as pedicel in females and longer in male, about 4.5 times; palpus yellowish-white; scutum with two fine brown vittae; legs yellow; wing clear in female, but with a brown spot at apex of veins R 2+ 3 in male. Abdomen in male: syntergite 1+2 and tergite 3 yellow, tergites 4 and 5 grey with three brown spots. Abdomen in female with syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–4 yellow, tergites 3 and 4 each with three brown spots, those on tergite 4 with grey areas between the spots, tergite 5 grey with 2 brown spots. Abdomen strongly modified in male, compressed laterally, and tergite 5 with a median keel, a tuft of long setae and ventrally with strong black setae on each side ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 35–40. 35–37 ). Sternite 5 ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 35–40. 35–37 ). Aedeagus in lateral view as in Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35–40. 35–37 .

Comments. The species was described from New Caledonia based on one female. The holotype was reviewed by Stein (1907a), Crosskey (1962) and Pont (2000). Paramonov (1961) described the male, recorded from Nouméa, and added some characters to the original description. The male was keyed but the author considered females impossible to distinguish from females of P. apicalis Schiner and P. australis Malloch. Crosskey (1962) redescribed the species. He examined only females, but keyed the male based on Paramonov’s (1961) description. In the key, the couplet that segregates this species from P. maculigera is based only on distribution (from New Caledonia or not). Comparison of the male abdomen of both species shows that they are very similar, especially the keel with long setae on tergite 4, but the long setae on the ventral margin of tergite 4 are all long in P. caledonica and the straight setae on the disc of the epandrium are also more numerous and longer in this species (compare Fig. 10 View FIGURES 1–16. 1–4 with Crosskey’s (1962) Fig. 47).

The species was very abundant in the material examined, but almost all the specimens were females: of the 400 specimens examined, only 12 were males.

Distribution. New Caledonia ( New Caledonia, Isle of Pines, Loyalty Is),? Vanuatu.
