Genus Maccevethus Dallas, 1852

General comments on genus Maccevethus Dallas. The species of this genus are so similar one from the others that only males can be specifically identified. Much confusion reigned in the systematics of this genus (see Kment & Baňař 2010). Kment & Baňař (2010) studied the collections of several museum in Czech Republic and Hungary and their carefull examinations led them to consider the following taxa: Maccevethus errans (Fabricius, 1794) , M. caucasicus (Kolenati, 1845) , M. corsicus corsicus Signoret, 1862 , and M. corsicus persicus Jakovlev, 1882 . Although these authors say that they “must admit that our identifications of M. corsicus persicus are rather arbitrary,” they reinstated persicus at subspecic rank, a taxon from which they studied only few samples from Afghanistan and Mongolia. They reported it also, according to other earlier papers, from Iran, Asian Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. We agree with several authors (including Kment & Baňař 2010) that corsicus and persicus are not always clear cut and that their separation is not easy to do above all in intermediates (an opinion by Moulet [1994b], but greatly misunderstood by Kerzhner 1998).
