Apetasimus pleomelarrosus -group

Diagnosis

The two pleomelarrosus -group species are characterized by an elytral depression on the lateral face posterior to humeral angle ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 B, 6J). Overall form more elongate than involucer- or guttatus -groups, eyes and tarsal lobes developed. Labrum bearing wide lateral setal brush. Pronotum with disc depressed to slightly convex, prosternal process weakly recurved dorsad behind coxae and expanded apically. Lateral elytral margin narrow, interstices regular to irregular, never with dilated and raised areas bearing setal tufts. The two pleomelarrosus -group species are superficially dissimilar; one is large and dark, the other small and pale.

Description

Color: Orange-red, dark brick red, to black.

Length 4.7mm – 8.3mm, Width 1.7–4.5mm.

Head: Labrum with wide emargination, wide lateral setal brush ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 A, 6F). Eyes not reduced, facets fine, 14–27. Temple definite, angle sharp to rounded, postgenae straight to concave.

Thorax: Pronotum narrowed posterad, widest at midpoint ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 C) or anterad ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C), laterally rounded with or without small sinuation anterad posterior angle, anteriorly shallowly to definitely emarginate, posterior margin sinuate to bisinuate, lateral margin explanate or not. Prosternal process expanded apically and indistinctly ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 D) to distinctly recurved dorsad behind coxae ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 H), overlapping mesosternum. Elytral striae shallow, margin weakly explanate, lateral excavation present behind humeri ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 B, 6J). Metacoxae less widely separated than involucer -group species, L/W ratio 0.14–0.16. Tarsal lobes 1–3 dilated ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 P, 6I).
