Austronanus View in CoL specimen A
( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 )
Material examined. Ovigerous Ψ, 1.20 mm, Campbell Island, New Zealand, off Boulder Beach, Smoothwater Bay, 52°32'S 169°12'E, sediment and terrestrial fibrous root detritus, 15 January 1980, P.C. Terrill, CA172, AM P68206.
Remarks. The single specimen has a damaged head; parts of pereopod I, and all other pereopods are missing. It appears to be close to the new species Austronanus aucklandensis described above, including a 5segmented antennula, but the shape of the frontal margin of the head differs, to judge from the undamaged parts, the body is slightly broader, the uropods are shorter, and the female operculum is more pointed.
By analogy with the presence of closely related paramunnid species on the various subantarctic islands documented by Just and Wilson (2004), Austronanus specimen A probably represents a separate, new species, but the specimen is not suitable for description.
