Ptychotricos Schaus, 1894: 227 . Type species: Ptychotrico Schaus, 1894, by monotypy.
Ptychotrichos , justified emendation (see ICZN 1999: 33.2.3.1); Hampson, 1898: xx, 27, 477, fig. 263; Schaus, 1905: 190; Hampson, 1914: 291; Hampson, 1915: pl. 16, fig. 20; Dyar, 1914: 163.
Ptychotrichus View in CoL [sic]; Zerny, 1912: 135, unjustified emendation, preoccupied by Ptychotrichus Kuwert, 1898 (Coleoptera) ; Draudt, 1915: 164.
Diagnosis. Forewing narrow and almost twice the length of hindwing. Hairbrush concealed on dorsal surface of inner margin of hindwing, glandular area on lateral surfaces of T2–3. Aedeagus sigmoid and distinctly longer than wide. Caecum long and turned downwards. Saccus undeveloped. Vinculum sigmoid. Valvae asymmetrical, with long and thick ventral setae. Uncus bilobed, flatenned dorso-ventrally. Female ninth tergite entirely sclerotized, bursa copulatrix round, and ductus seminalis arising from ductus bursae.
Etymology. From the greek roots ptycho (to fold) and tricho (hair), the name refers to the androconia, which remain concealed in a fold on the dorsal surface of the inner margin of the hindwings when not in use. The omission of the “h” in the word “trichos” probably constitutes a lapsus calami. However, in the absence of clear evidence of inadvertent error in the original publication, it did not need correction (ICZN, article 32.5.1). But Hampson (1898) corrected it anyway, citing Schaus’ (1894) authorship. Given that Ptychotrichos has since then been used, it is in prevailing usage, and must therefore be used (ICZN, article 33).
