Valves elliptic to rhombic-elliptic with cuneate, broadly to obtusely rounded apices, length 46–166 µm, breadth 23–90 µm. Raphe straight, external central endings distant, axial area narrow, lateral area transversely rectangular connected to lateral areas. Lateral areas relatively broad, hyaline, narrowed towards apices, encompassing ¼ to ½ of the valve width. Transapical striae developed in the marginal zone, radiate, 7–14 in 10 µm.

Distribution:—Widespread (cosmopolitan) marine species, in Europe known from the Arctic and from the Mediterranean Sea ( Witkowski et al. 2000). Black Sea, in north-western region ( Ryabushko 1991, Guslyakov & Nevrova 1998, Guslyakov 2002), in Bulgaria ( Temniskova-Topalova & Petrova-Karadjova 1998), Romania ( Bodeanu 1987 –1988, Caraus 2002), Crimean ( Proshkina-Lavrenko 1963a, Kucherova 1973, Guslyakov & Nevrova 1998, Nevrova 1999, 2008, Nevrova & Revkov 2003, Senichkina et al. 2004); Caucasian coast ( Proshkina-Lavrenko 1963 a, Nevrova 1996).
