Tornatellina (Tornatellinops) iredalei Pilsbry & Cooke, 1915 View in CoL

Pl. 1, fig. G; Pl. 12, fig. D

Pilsbry & Cooke, (1914–1916) 1915. Manual of Conchology. Second series: Pulmonata , 23: 180, pl. 39, figs. 6–8.

Type material: Holotype whereabouts not known; paratypes (3), ANSP 8312 View Materials (dry shell material).

Label details: ‘Sunday Island, Kermadec Is., Tom Iredale.’

Type locality: ‘Kermadec Is.: Sunday Island’ (Pilsbry & Cooke 1915 [in 1914–1916]: 180).

Previous illustrations of type material: Pilsbry & Cooke (1915 [in 1914–1916]: pl.39, figs. 6–8).

Remarks: The type material was collected on Raoul Island in 1908 by Tom Iredale ( Iredale 1913). According to Pilsbry & Cooke (1915 [in 1914–1916]: 180), the ‘type’ of Tornatellina (Tornatellinops) iredalei was to be sent to Canterbury Museum, New Zealand (CMNZ), and a ‘paratype’ retained at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (ANSP), but there is no record of a type in the CMNZ collection (e.g., Freeman et al. 1997). There are currently three paratypes of T. iredalei at ANSP, but whether or not one of these is the missing holotype has not been determined. A specimen illustrated by Pilsbry & Cooke (1915 [in 1914–1916]: pl. 39, figs. 6–8) was presumably the holotype, albeit not identified as such. Pilsbry & Cooke’s hand-drawn illustrations are reproduced here in pl. 12, fig. D, along with a photograph of a paratype in pl. 1, fig. G.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Tornatellinops iredalei Pilsbry & Cooke, 1915 by Cooke & Kondo (1961: 169) and Spencer et al. (2009: 214).

Distribution: Kermadec Islands; Raoul Island (Pilsbry & Cooke 1915 [in 1914–1916]; Cooke & Kondo 1961).
