Stenosigma mariae Ferreira & Hermes , new species
( Figs. 4 View FIGURES 1–6 , 11 View FIGURES 7–12. 7 , 16 View FIGURES 13–18. 13, 14 , 23 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 , 26 View FIGURES 25–30. 25–27 )
Comments and diagnosis. It differs from the other species in the genus by the following set of characters: pronotal carina with lamella developed dorsally ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 13–18. 13, 14 ); sternopleural carina not developed; dorsal sulcus of the mesepisternum cariniform; without evident striation in the propodeum; and humerus with a prominent projection ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 ). It differs particularly from S. testaceum , a similar and closely related species, by the presence of the humeral projection ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 ); T1 with a basal elevation; the apical lamella of the clypeus truncated ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 7–12. 7 ); and the sculpture of the body with denser and deeper punctation, with a corrugated appearance on the dorsal portion of the pronotum ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 13–18. 13, 14 , 26 View FIGURES 25–30. 25–27 ).
Description. Holotype female. Body length (from head to apex of T1): 11.8 mm; Fore wing length (from mid tegula to apex): 8 mm.
Color. Head and mesosoma with yellow integument. Metasoma yellow-brownish. Black marks as follows: surrounding middle ocellus; U-shaped mark, with extremities at frons and base on vertex, surrounding lateral ocelli; band in occipital region connecting posterior compound eyes; broad shiny mark covering anterior pronotum, except edges of lower extremity; short marks on dorsal pronotum; bright spot below tegulae; three broad bands in mesepisternum, larger on anterior region, converging to single mark in mesoscutum, trident shaped; mark on lower portion of metanotum; thin marks at apical propodeum margin and around propodeal carina; mark on upper surface of propodeum; short mark at T1 base; elongated band at S1 base; triangular mark on T2. Antenna reddish yellow. Anterior legs yellow; middle and hind legs brown-yellowish. Wings dark brown anteriorly, clearer posteriorly.
Pilosity. Long bristles concentrated in margin of mandible and anterior pronotal surface. Fine, whitish bristles on clypeus. Remaining bristles short.
Sculpture. Clypeus smooth, without macro-punctation, with few sparse shallow punctures; frons with dense punctation; sparse punctation from vertex to occiput; pronotum dorsally with wrinkled appearance, with dense punctation, and laterally, below humeral region, with shallow and little evident punctures; mesepisternum with dense coarse punctation above dorsal sulcus, below with sparse punctation; scutum, scutellum, and metanotum with dense punctation, with punctures deeper than those found in pronotum; propodeum with dense and deep punctation dorsally, and shallower and sparse punctation laterally; T1 with evident punctation apically; T2 without punctation.
Structure. Labrum rounded apically. Clypeus longer than wide, apical region emarginated, short not carinate, lamella well-developed at margins, apex truncate; inter-antennal region narrow, smaller than an antennal alveolus, with cariniform elevation; pronotal carina developed throughout, lamelliform dorsally; humeral projection evident, with marked depression between dorsal portion and latero-inferior portion of pronotum; pronotal fovea rounded; tegulae slightly depressed at medial margin; mesoepisternum with dorsal developed carina at dorsal sulcus; declivity accentuated between mesoscutum and scutellum; propodeum with well-developed medial projection, without evident striation; T1 with basal elevation; pre-apical fossa elongated, slit-shaped; T2 longer than wide, with an apical lamella.
Male unknown.
Etymology. The name is an indirect reference to the type-locality: " Madre de Dios ". In the Christian tradition the mother of God is represented by the Virgin Mary.
Type Material. Holotype female ( AMNH): ‘ PERU: Madre de Dios \ Tambopata Wild. Res.\ 12°51’S, 69°17’W, 290m. \ 22–25 January, 1985\ J. Carpenter & D. Bowers’ ‘ Pachymenes \ det. J. M. Carpenter’ ‘ Stenosigma aff ♀ \ imitans’ (handwritten label) ‘ AMNH 0015’.
Collecting Records. Known only from the type-locality.
