Plants cespitose. Culms homomorphic, arching and clambering, 0.3–8 m tall, infra- and supranodal bands of trichomes absent. Profusely branched from the median and upper nodes, without thorns. Leaves not differentiated into culm leaves and foliage leaves. Leaf sheaths without fimbriae at the apex, translucent swelling absent, outer ligule absent, blades large, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, midnerve not prominent. Synflorescences terminal, open panicles, the lower branches with male spikelets only, the upper branches with male spikelets below and terminal female spikelets above or female spikelets only; spikelets with filiform pedicels, solitary and unisexual, glumes 2 (female spikelets) or absent (male spikelets), anthecium foveolate (with small pits) only at the apex. Fruit a basic caryopsis, hilum linear, ½–¾ the length of caryopsis.
Parodiolyra is an herbaceous bamboo genus mainly characterized by the erect to scandent culms, 0.3–8 m tall, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate leaves and synflorescence a terminal panicle, bearing male and female spikelets on the same synflorescence, with female spikelets 3–4 mm long, the pedicels filiform and anthecium foveolate (with small pits) only at the apex (Soderstrom & Zuloaga 1981). The genus has four species in Costa Rica to South America ( Kellogg 2015, Oliveira et al. 2020c). In Brazil, three species occur in the Amazon and Mata Atlântica domains ( Oliveira et al. 2020c). In the Serra do Cachimbo, it is represented by one species.
