TYPE LOCALITY: "l'lnde" [ India] .

DISTRIBUTION: Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Kangean Isl, Sumbawa, Bali), Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Introduced to Yemen, Zanzibar, Socotra, Madagascar, the Comoro Isis, and the Philippines; scattered distribution on many SE Asian islands due to introductions.

STATUS: CITES - Appendix III ( India).

SYNONYMS: baptistae Pocock, 1933; bengalensis Hardwicke, 1833 ; deserti Bonhote, 1898; hanensis Matschie, 1908 ; malaccensis Gmelin, 1788 ; mayori Pocock, 1933; pallida Gray, 1832 ; rasse Horsfield, 1824; schlegelii Pollen, 1868; taivana Schwarz, 1911 ; thai Kloss, 1919; wellsi Pocock, 1933.

COMMENTS: The correct identity of V. malaccensis is uncertain ( Pocock, 1933b).
