Diagnosis. Maximum known TL 318 mm. Dermal scales present; subdermal scales present or not. Eye visible or not (visible in a juvenile specimen of M. albiceps Boulenger, 1882 ; M. Wilkinson pers. comm.). Nostrils subcircular, may or not be visible from above. Tentacle small, widely separated from nostril, closer to corner of mouth; tentacular opening in position where eye would be expected. A small terminal shield, not segmented by annular grooves, may be present posterior to vent, or may be absent as in M. supernumeraria Taylor, 1969 . A weak vertical terminal keel may be present. Dentition in three series, ST absent; maxillary teeth may extend to the level of the choanae or posteriorly of them; the teeth are monocuspid, except PPT, which may be bicuspid. No diastema between PT and PVT. Tongue attached anteriorly to mandibular mucosa; no narial plugs on tongue.
