Diplommatina Benson, 1849 View in CoL
Diplommatina BenSon, 1849: 193 View in CoL . Type SpecieS (SubSequently deSignated by NeVill, 1878): Bulimus folliculus Pfeiffer, 1846 .
Diagnosis. Diplommatina is usually characterized by a prominent columellar lamella in the aperture, a parietal lamella inside the last whorl, a constriction near the beginning of the last whorl and usually smooth inner and outer surfaces of the operculum ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4 – 8 ).
Remarks. There are exceptions with regard to all characters mentioned in the diagnosis of the genus. Among the species usually classified in Diplommatina , some species lack a columellar lamella in the aperture, a parietal lamella, or a constriction of the last whorl. We found an arcuate ridge on the inner surface of the operculum of Diplommatina javana ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 4 – 8 ), usually considered as a characteristic of Palaina .
Diplommatina View in CoL in the traditional sense proved to be polyphyletic in molecular phylogenies ( Rundell 2008; Webster et al. 2012). Thus, the delimitation of this genus and its subdivisions has to be revised. This will also affect the delimitation of the former subgenera Sinica Möllendorff, 1885 View in CoL and Pseudopalaina Möllendorff, 1897 View in CoL , which have been used for species from Java. These are currently not in use, because the position and the strength of the folds in the last whorl, on which these taxa were based (see Kobelt 1902), are too variable to allow a clear subdivision of the genus (see also Vermeulen 1993). Note, that Pseudopalaina View in CoL was first published by Möllendorff (1897) and included only Diplommatina (Pseudopalaina) sulcicollis Möllendorff, 1897 View in CoL from Java. Thus, the designation of Palaina polymorpha Crosse, 1866 View in CoL from Palau as type species of Pseudopalaina View in CoL by Wenz (1939) is not valid and Pseudopalaina View in CoL is not a synonym of Hungerfordia Beddome, 1889 View in CoL (see Yamazaki et al. 2013), but would be available for a genus-level group including species from Java.
Currently, molecular data are not available from the type species of Diplommatina View in CoL from the Himalaya nor of any species from Java classified as Diplommatina View in CoL . The severely needed revision of the genus-level systematics of the Diplommatinidae View in CoL is beyond the scope of this paper.
