scientific name

Ophryosporus anomalus R.M.King & H.Rob., Phytologia 25: 66. 1972
status

Ophryosporus anomalus R.M.King & H.Rob., Phytologia 25: 66. 1972

Typonym: Piqueria cumingii B.L.Rob., Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts, 42: 11. 1906, non Ophryosporus cumingii Benth. ex Baker (1895: 188, based on Mandon 264 from Bolivia.).

Type.

Chile. Region I Tarapacá and Region II Antofagasta: "Peruvia meridionalis: Cobija, Iquiqui et Arica", H.Cuming 953 (lectotype, selected by Plos and Sancho (2013: 338): K [K000486684, photo!]; isolectotypes E [E00322766, photo!], GH [GH00010778!], K [K000486685, photo!], P [P02673192, photo!]); remaining syntypes: Gaudichaud s.n. (B [probably destroyed, could not be found], F [F1012247, photo!]).

Ophryosporus anomalus has been cited for Peru ( King and Robinson 1972b; Brako and Zarucchi 1993), likely due to the type collection label ("Peruvia meridionalis..."). However, the localities mentioned there ("...Cobija, Iquiqui et Arica") are now situated in Chile, and all other reports originate from the coastal zone around Tocopilla ( Johnston 1932; Jaffuel 1936) and therefore Luebert et al. (2007) considered it a Chilean endemic. We hereby extend the distribution of the species to include the populations from the coastal area between Río Loa and Iquique, previously referred to as O. floribundus ( Muñoz-Schick et al. 2001; Pinto and Luebert 2009). See discussion below under the latter species.
