Studied material. 7 spec. Niederleis ( Austria) NHMW 1860 View Materials /0015/0701; 1 spec. Bad Vöslau ( Austria) NHMW 1872 View Materials /0030/0106; 1 spec. Forchtenau ( Austria) NHMW 1866 View Materials /0001/1080; 1 spec. Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) NHMW 1859 View Materials /0037/0030.

Discussion. Recently, Brunetti et al. (2011) clarified the status of this species, which was frequently intermingled with Brocchinia mitraeformis ( Brocchi, 1814) or B. tauroparva ( Sacco, 1894) in the literature ( Chirli 2002, Landau et al. 2006 and references therein). Brunetti et al. (2011) state that the protoconch of B. subanodosa has 2.75 whorls instead of 2 in B. depressiplicata Sacco, 1894 [= Voluta mitraeformis Brocchi, 1814 , which is a primary homonym of Voluta mitraeformis Lamarck, 1811 ]. Differences in the teleoconchs are the reduced axial sculpture and the broader spiral cords of B. subanodosa . The Austrian shells agree fully in protoconch morphology and teleoconch outline and sculpture with B. subanodosa as defined by Brunetti et al. (2011).

Although Voluta mitraeformis Brocchi, 1814 is a primary homonym of Voluta mitraeformis Lamarck, 1811 , a replacement name is not obligatory according to ICZN Art. 23.9.5, as both taxa have been considered as separate genera after 1899. Therefore, the proposal of Brunetti et al. (2011) is disputable and Brocchinia mitraeformis ( Brocchi, 1814) is a valid name.

Distribution. This species occurs from the Burdigalian to Langhian in the Paratethys and appears during the Late Miocene in the Proto –Mediterranean Sea where it becomes a ubiquitous species during the Pliocene. Its last occurrence is mentioned by Brunetti et al. (2011) from the Gelasian of Italy.

Paratethys —Ottnangian: North Alpine Foreland Basin (Bavaria: Gernergraben, Kaltenbachgraben); Badenian: Vienna Basin ( Austria: Niederleis, Bad Vöslau); Eisenstadt–Sopron Basin ( Austria: Forchtenau); Transylvanian Basin ( Romania: Lăpugiu de Sus, CoŞteiu de Sus). Proto –Mediterranean Sea —Tortonian: Po Basin ( Italy: Montegibbio); Early Pliocene: Italy; Spain (Estepona), Early Pleistocene: Italy.
