Cheumatopsyche erskinensis sp. nov.

( Figs 1–4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 9)

Material examined. Holotype male, Lord Howe Island, Erskine Valley, 21–22.xi.1996, A. Wells, lt tr. Paratypes: 1 male, 1 female, same data as for holotype.

Diagnosis. Males of this species are distinguished from those of C. howensis by the blunt-tipped apical segment of each gonopod and by the truncate apical margin of abdominal segment X in dorsal view. Females differ from those of C. howensis in having the apico-dorsal angles of abdominal sternite VIII in lateral view rounded, not produced ( Fig. 9).

Wings ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Forewing length: male 5.2 mm (N =2), female 7.3 mm (N =1).

Male genitalia ( Figs 2–4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Tergite IX in dorsal view narrow distally, cerci short, broadly rounded, very shallowly separated; in lateral view with distal margin produced to form rounded setose lobe medially. Tergite X in dorsal view bearing pair of small wart-like setose lobes laterally, another pair at apico-lateral angles; in lateral view rounded apico-laterally, not upturned. Phallic apparatus narrowest in middle region, lobed apically. Gonopods in ventral view slender, each angled mesally in distal quarter, terminal segment parallel-sided, blunt, and bearing several very short setae at apex; in lateral view slender, down-turned distally.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 9): sternite VIII pale, apico-dorsal angle rounded.

Etymology. Named for Erskine Valley, the type locality.
