DISTRIBUTION. — Pacific : Japan “from Kii Peniunsula to Tosa Bay in 150-200 m deep” (Tsuchiya 2000). Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Norfolk Ridge, Loyalty Ridge, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga, empty shells in 260-490 m, live in 425 m. First record in the southwest Pacific .

REMARKS. — The holotype of Mipus sugitanii lacks the protoconch. There are two species in the southwest Pacific with almost identical teleoconchs but that differ in their protoconchs. The holotype of M. sugitanii could belong to either of these species. I provisionally refer all the present material, with the more common, planktotrophic type of development, to M. sugitanii , pending resolution of this issue. The other species, with a paucispiral protoconch, is M. tonganus n. sp. (described below). Multispiral protoconch of 2.8 conical whorls, 720 Μm high, 710 Μm wide at the base. Protoconch-I of about 0.8 whorls, sculptured with pustules over the entire surface. Protoconch-II of about 2 whorls, with 2 spiral keels, and sculptured with a series of subsutural threads and a series of similar threads over each keel; a diffuse granulation is present in the interspaces, with granules often fused to give rise to a series of prosocline threadlets between the second abapical keel and the suture.
