Helgreelia parkeri View in CoL , sp. nov. ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 4A–C)

Etymology. Named for Dr. Frank Parker, whose collecting efforts in Costa Rica have yielded such interesting materials, including most of the specimens of this species.

Diagnosis. Ocellar setae as strong as anteriormost reclinate fronto-orbital seta. Abdominal tergites silvergrey pruinose laterally and in posterior half, brownish-grey pruinose in anterior half; densely setulose, with setulae black; tergites 4–5 with dark spots at bases of setulae in male, spots lacking in female. In female: shape of sternite 2 trapezoidal; sternite 3 1.2 X wider than long; sternites 4 and 5 each with width and length subequal; sternite 7 with desclorotized area medioposteriorly, appearing as nearly divided; with tiny setulae along posterior margin.

Adults, ɗ, Ψ. Body length 4.0– 4.1 mm.

Head (as in Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B). Height 1.9–2.2 X length; width 1.1–1.3 X height. Frons 2.4–2.9 X wider than long. Ocellar setae as strong as anteriormost reclinate fronto-orbital seta. Gena 0.50–0.53 X as high as head height.

Thorax ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Scutum 1.3–1.5 mm long. Scutellum 1.4–1.5 X wider than long. Wing (as in Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Length 4.2–4.4 mm, 2.8–3.0 X longer than high.

Abdomen, male ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, inset). Tergites silver-grey pruinose laterally and in posterior half, brownishgrey pruinose in anterior half, except tergite 3 mostly brownish; densely setulose, setulae black; setulae along posterior edges of syntergite 1+2 through tergite 5 longer than others, more so laterally; tergites 4–5 with dark spots at bases of setulae. Sternites 2–5 also with setulae longest along posterior margin. Tergite 6 a thin transverse strip. Sternite 6 asymmetrical; a thin sclerotized strip only present on left side; fused to tergite 7 laterally; bare. Tergite 7 entire, as a thin, symmetrical, transverse, sclerotized strip (fused to sternite 6 on left side); bare; spiracle embedded in sclerite on left side. Tergite 8 separated from tergite 7, or only fused medially; 1/2 width of tergite 8; 2.0 X wider than long; bare.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A–C). Epandrium small; subquadrate from lateral view; setulose laterally; lacking discrete surstylar lobes, but slightly bulging in surstylar area, with 3–4 corresponding enlarged setulae. Hypandrium elongate, more than 2 X longer than maximum width; anterior half dorsoventrally flat, with lateral edges subparallel (slightly tapering anteriorly); posterior half broader than anterior part of hypandrium, deeply U-shaped from ventral view, extending laterally around aedeagal apodeme and aedeagus as saddle. Gonopod a simple lobe on posterior part of each hypandrial arm; setulose, with 2 slightly longer setulae posteriorly; with tiny, articulated dorsal lobe, bearing tiny setulae. Paramere absent. Aedeagus small, subequal in length to epandrium; surrounded by membrane; sclerotized part with distinct left and right halves, upcurved and pointed posteriorly. Aedeagal apodeme rod-like, 1.6 X longer than length of hypandrium; posterior end bilobed. Cercus small, setulose.

Abdomen, female. As in male, except lacking dark spots at bases of setulae on tergites 4–5; setulae of tergite 5 dense, of normal size. Sternite 2 large, 0.05 mm wide, 2.0 X wider than long; shape trapezoidal, anterior end wider than posterior end by 3.8 X. Sternite 3 3/5 width of sternite 2, 1.2 X wider than long. Sternite 4 1/2 width of sternite 2, width and length subequal. Sternite 5 1/3 width of sternite 2, width and length subequal.

Female terminalia. Tergite 7 dark, bare of pruinescence in anterior half, silvery-grey pruinose in posterior half; posterior margin densely setulose. Sternite 6 large, width 0.9 X that of sternite 3, 4.4 X wider than long. Sternite 7 with desclorotized area medioposteriorly, appearing as nearly divided; with tiny setulae along posterior margin.

Type material. Holotype ɗ (pinned, poor condition (antennal first flagellomeres missing, mid legs missing, several setae missing; Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B), abdomen dissected, in small vial with glycerin on same pin), deposited in USNM (with permission from EMUS), with following labels: “ COSTA RICA, Guan[acaste Province]., 3km SE R[io] Naranjo, 17–20.XI.1991, F.D. Parker” / “SDG dissection 1321” / “ HOLOTYPUS Helgreelia parkeri Gaimari. ” Paratypes: COSTA RICA: same label as holotype, except 20–29.XI.1991 (1ɗ, SDG dissection 1320, EMUS); Alajuela Province: 20 km S Upala, F.D.
