( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30–33 )

Amphibaris bruniceps Bondar (1946: 101 View in CoL , description), Vaurie (1953: 9, discussion of located specimens).

Sphenobaris bruniceps : Wibmer & O’Brien (1986: 292, with reference to Kuschel 1983).

Diagnosis. Chryasus bruniceps is a stout, entirely brown species with vermiculate pronotum. It is most similar to two unassigned specimens with more medially inserted antenna, the one from Fonte Boa in Amazonas , Brazil ( SNSD) being 3.4 mm long, the other from near Cariari in Limón, Costa Rica ( MNCR) being 2.4 mm long ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 30–33 ).

Material examined. BRAZIL. Bahia, Agua Preta , 1938, 6 specimens ( AMNH) .

Notes. Kuschel (1983) synonymized Amphibaris Casey, 1922 with Sphenobaris Champion, 1909 based on his studies of the respective type species made during the late 1940s. This paper was published to resolve protracted taxonomic and nomenclatural issues in preparation for the upcoming catalogue by Wibmer & O’Brien (1986). Wibmer & O’Brien (1986) applied this synonymy to all four species previously included in Amphibaris . Baridius ignavus Boheman, 1844 and Amphibaris dispar Bondar, 1946 are transferred here from Sphenobaris to Glyptobaris Casey , as Glyptobaris ignava (Boheman) and Glyptobaris dispar (Bondar) , new combinations. I have cleaned, remounted and photographed one male A. bruniceps of the series at AMNH ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 30–33 ). As already mentioned by Vaurie (1953), the collecting date on the label disagrees with that given in Bondar (1946).
