Discussion: Phloeomys Division. A Philippine Old Endemic in the same monophyletic group as Batomys and Carpomys ( Musser and Heaney, 1992) . Reviewed by Musser and Gordon (1981) and Musser et al. (1985). Phylogenetic analyses of complete mtDNA cytochrome b sequences for 13 of the 16 genera of endemic Philippine murines indicates Crateromys belongs in a clade with Batomys and Phloeomys ( Jansa and Heaney, 2001) . The tie to Phloeomys was suggested an an alternative hypothesis by Musser and Heaney (1992). Except for the phylogenetic link to Phloeomys , no data supports a close relationship between Crateromys and Coryphomys , Lenomys , Pogonomys , Chiruromys , Chiropodomys , and Mallomys , which, along with Crateromys and Phloeomys , were brought together in the Phloeomyinae by Tate (1936), an arrangement followed by Simpson (1945). Placed by Misonne (1969) in a Lenothrix Group of a more inclusive Lenothrix-Parapodemus Division, and in a Batomys Section of a larger Micromys Group by Pavlinov et al. (1995 a). Actual distribution in the archipelago and number of species in the genus have yet to be determined.
