Munida scabra var. longipes Borradaile 1900: 422 (type locality: Talili Bay, New Britain Talili Bay, New Britain).

Paramunida scabra .— Tirmizi & Javed 1993: 131, figs 58, 59 (off Tanzania and off Mozambique, 100–347 m).

Material examined. NMV J55069 View Materials , 1 male (cl 11.9 mm), Western Australia, off Carnarvon, SS 10/2005 122 (24°33.12'S, 112°15.12'E to 24°33.804'S, 112°15.18'E), 404– 396m, 7 Dec 2005 GoogleMaps . NMV J55098 View Materials 1 female (cl 7.4 mm), Western Australia, off Red Bluff, SS 10/2005 128 (23°59.106'S 112°32.7'E to 23°59.598'S 112°32.22'E) 398–402m, 8 Dec 2005 GoogleMaps .

NMV J55065 View Materials , 5 ovigerous females (cl 10.1–12.1 mm), 1 female (cl 10.6 mm) 3 males (cl 11.3–12.6 mm), Western Australia, off Carnarvon, SS 10/2005 121 (24°33.546'S, 112°15.48'E to 24°34.134'S, 112°15.9'E) 388– 368m, 7 Dec 2005 GoogleMaps .

Remarks. This material was originally identified as P. stichas by Poore et al. 2008, but it is very different from P. stichas in a number of respects, most obviously the distomesial spine of antennal article 2 is not mucronated and the sternal plastron has numerous striae. This material generally agrees well with the description of Paramunida scabra . The wide geographic and bathymetric distribution of P. scabra indicate that it may actually comprise complex of species – the occurrences from eastern Africa (off Tanzania and Mozanbique) are especially questionable. Our material of P. scabra is slightly different from type specimens from Indonesia. In our specimens, the second antennal article is twice longer than the third article, while in the type material the second article is always less than twice the length of the third. Our specimens have a longer antenna article 2 distomesial spine than the type material (over-reaching the antennal peduncle, whereas in the type material it does not reach the end of the peduncle), but this character appears to be variable in P. scabra from Indonesia and the Philipines (E. Macpherson pers com). Unfortunately, this Western Australian material was preserved in formalin and could not be sequenced for molecular analysis. Given the slight morphological difference and the absence of molecular data we have chosen to conservatively refer this material to P. scabra .

Distribution. Hong Kong, East and South China Sea (Dongsha), Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia (off Central Queensland), and now from Western Australia; 70–1630 m. The occurrences along off eastern Africa (off Tanzania and off Mozambique) are questionable and therefore require confirmation.
