13. Istrianis lvovskyi View in CoL sp. nov.

Teleiodes squamodorella ( Amsel, 1935) : Lvovsky & Piskunov 1989: 551, Figs. 37–40 View FIGURES 22 – 42 .

Material examined. Holotype ♂, [ Mongolia] MNR, Bajan-Khong. [orskyi] Aimak, 140 km S of Shine Dzhinsta, Ekhin-Gol Oasis, 21.vii.81, Lvovskiy | vyvedeno s turangi | vyvodka No. 7 | Teleiodes squamodorella ( Amsel, 1935) , Piskunov det., 1985 | (gen. slide 63/10, O. Bidzilya); 1♂, 1♀, same data, but 18.vii.1981 (gen. slide 252/ 12 ♂; 253/12 ♀, O. Bidzilya) ( ZIN); 1 ♂, same data, but 15.vii.1981 (gen. prep. in sugar) ( ZIN 00010); 1♂, same data, but 13.vii.1981 (gen. prep. in sugar) ( ZIN 00009); 1♀, same data, but 3.viii.1981 (gen. slide 61/10♀, O. Bidzilya) ( ZIN 00008); 2♂, same data but 50 km S of Shine Dzhinsta, Dzun-Mod Oasis, at the day-time, 22.vii.1981 (gen. prep. in sugar) ( ZIN, ZMUC).

Adult ( Figs 32–24 View FIGURES 22 – 42 ). Wingspan 8.2–9.5 mm. Head, thorax and tegulae light grey to yellow, labial palpus white with black basal and medial rings, upper side off-white; scape black, other antennal segments black with white basal rings. Forewing cream to dark yellow, costal margin with three diffuse brown patches and small tufts of slightly raised yellow scales at base, at 1/3 and 2/3, brown streak in fold, a diffuse group of brown-tipped scales at 2/3, subapical area mottled with black, cilia grey, brown-tipped; hindwing and cilia light grey.

Variation. One paratype (male) is darker, forewings are mainly greyish black rather than creamy yellow although the wing pattern is similar to rest of specimens from the type series.

Male genitalia ( Figs 72, 73 View FIGURES 69 – 74 ). Distal portion of tergite VIII slightly longer than broad, parallel-sided or gradually narrowed apically, posterior margin weakly rounded, anterolateral lobes very narrow, anteromedial emargination broad, its distal portion rounded or subtriangular; sternite VIII about two times broader than long, posteriolateral projections long, digitate; uncus tapered, about as broad as base of gnathos; gnathos longer than uncus, apex with strongly sclerotized hook; tegumen boomerang-shaped, lateral lobes parallel-sided, anteromedial emargination broadly rounded; valva broad, strongly inflated in distal half; phallus weakly narrowed in middle, apex nearly rounded, longer than valva.

Female genitalia ( Figs 97 View FIGURES 96 – 98 , 126, 127 View FIGURES 126 – 140 ). Segment VIII trapezoidal; apophyses anteriores two times longer than segment VIII; anterior margin with elongated lobes; posterior sclerite small, subquadrangular; anterolateral sclerites oxhorn-shaped; anterior sclerites narrow, digitate; antrum tubular; ductus bursae long; corpus bursae ovate; signum subhexagonal, posterior lobe with nearly straight upper margin, anterior lobe distinctly broader than posterior lobe with shallow medial emargination, medial ridge narrow.

Diagnosis. The wing pattern of I. lvovskyi resembles that of I. falkovitshi , I. piskunovi and I. sruogai but differs in the lighter, yellowish cream rather than greyish black ground colour of the forewing. The male genitalia are similar to those of I. sruogai , but both uncus and gnathos are more strongly narrowed distally and the uncus is apically pointed rather than rounded. The female genitalia are also very similar to those of I. sruogai except for the lobes of signum which are larger.

Biology. Larvae feed between two leaves of Populus euphratica Oliv. (= diversifolia Schrenk) ( Salicaceae ). The length of the larva is nearly 6 mm, head light grey to brown-green, first thoracic and anal sclerite light green. Pupation took place between two leaves. Pupa light grey, 3.3–4.8 mm ( Lvovsky & Piskunov 1989: 552–553). Adults emerged from the second half of July to early August; they have been observed on the trunks of the host plant.

Distribution. Mongolia (Bajan-Khongor aimak).

Etymology. I. lvovskyi is named after Alexandr Lvovsky, Saint Petersburg, Russia who collected the type series.

Notes. The species has been recorded from Mongolia as Teleiodes squamodorella ( Lvovsky & Piskunov 1989: 551, Figs. 37–40 View FIGURES 22 – 42 ), which is a misidentification, and the specimens from Mongolia turned out to belong to an undescribed species. Some of the genitalia preparations that had been saved in sugar have been re-mounted on standard genitalia slides.
