Rugosothynnus fulvescens sp. nov.

( Fig. 28–31 View FIGURE 28 View FIGURES 29 – 31 , 45 View FIGURES 44 – 45 )

Diagnosis. Male. Vertex and dorsum of mesosoma rugose; S1 sagittally carinate; S2 anteromedially subtuberculate; cuspis in profile branched with ventral branch directed posteriorly and about three times longer than dorsal branch in profile. Female. T2–6 with dense cluster of fulvous setae; and pygidium strongly raised anterolaterally and sagittally carinate.

Description. Male. Head. Rounded, weakly emarginate posteriorly, not narrowed behind eyes; clypeus truncate, convex basally with inverted Y-shaped carina, closely punctate basally, depressed, polished and sparsely punctate apically, closely punctate laterally; antennal prominence with V-shaped carina, produced below carina to antennal insertions; frons transversely carinate, rugosely punctate, sagittally carinate and weakly depressed below transverse carina; vertex rugose; gena closely to rugosely punctate.

Mesosoma . Pronotum as wide as head, rugose, anterior margin weakly emarginate, raised, carinate, acutely produced laterally; mesoscutum rugose; tegulae rugosely punctate basally; mesoscutellum rugose, flat, subtriangular, narrowly rounded posteriorly; metanotum rugosely punctate, below level of mesoscutellum; propodeum oblique posteriorly, not transversely carinate, finely rugose anteriorly with small medial impunctate area, finely transversely rugose posteriorly; fore coxae closely punctate; mesopleura rugose.

Metasoma. T1–6 closely punctate anteriorly, sparsely punctate posteriorly; S1 rugosely punctate, S2–7 closely punctate; gradulus straight and impunctate on T2–6, weakly curved and scrobiculate on S3–5, weakly curved, punctate and discontinuous medially on S6, obscure on S7; T1 truncate anteriorly, subtuberculate above truncation; S1 medially raised and carinate; S2 anteromedially tuberculate; hypopygium with angulate basal angles; cuspis in profile branched with ventral branch directed posteriorly and about three times longer than dorsal branch; paracuspis of medium length.

Colour. Black; ocellar macula orange; wings hyaline.

Length. Body 14–18 mm; fore wing 10–12 mm; hind wing 8–10 mm.

Female. Head. Subrectangular, posterior angles rounded; clypeus truncate, not sagittally carinate; frons longitudinally rugosely punctate, obscurely sagittally sulcate; vertex longitudinally rugosely punctate, not medially depressed; gena closely punctate; eyes large and elliptical; mandibles bidentate.

Mesosoma .. Pronotum weakly convex, not depressed near posterior angles, anterior angles not produced, rugosely punctate; mesoscutellum weakly convex, narrowed posteriorly, rugosely punctate; propodeum flat, not laterally depressed, truncate posteriorly, not densely setose, rugosely punctate dorsally, impunctate laterally, closely and finely punctate posteriorly.

Metasoma. T1–5 and S1–5 longitudinally rugosely punctate; T1 truncate, anterior angles rounded; T5 and S5 not produced; pygidium subtriangular, not spinose, closely punctate, strongly sagittally carinate, strongly anterolaterally subtuberculate.

Colour. Black except for small orange spot mesad to eye ventrally and about area of eye; T2–6 with cluster of fulvous setae.

Length. Body 14 mm.

Distribution. Coast and inland southern Australia from Yuna, west of Geraldton, Western Australia to Hattah, Victoria.

Etymology. The specific name is derived from Latin and refers to the colour of the fulvous setae on T3–6 of the female.

Remarks. Males resemble R. brunneus sp. nov. which has lower lobe of the cuspis downturned and not projecting beyond apex of upper lobe as well as R. confusus sp. nov. and R. schichai sp. nov. which have the cuspis truncate in profile. Differs from R. corrugatus by: punctation closer and deeper, rugose on head, mesosoma and S1; clypeus with inverted Y-shaped carina, depressed; antennal prominence with V-shaped carina; frons sagittally carinate to transverse carina; pronotum with anterior margin acutely produced laterally; mesoscutellum flat; propodeum oblique posteriorly; T1 subtuberculate above truncation; S2 anteromedially tuberculate; S8 with angulate basal angles; cuspis ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29 – 31 ) bifid; paracuspis of medium length.

Females resemble R. burnsi and R. brunneus sp. nov. which do not have fulvous setae on T3–6. Differs from R. corrugatus by: head subrectangular; clypeus not sagittally carinate; frons longitudinally rugosely punctate, obscurely sagittally sulcate; vertex longitudinally rugosely punctate; gena closely punctate to rugosely punctate; pronotum rugosely punctate; mesoscutellum rugosely punctate; propodeum flat, rugosely punctate dorsally; T1–5 and S1–5 longitudinally rugosely punctate; pygidium subtriangular, not spinose, closely punctate; black with frontal maculae yellow, and setae on T3–6 fulvous.
