PRESENT STATUS: Bufo ictericus Spix, 1824 ( Rhinella icterica in Frost, 2014).
REMARKS: The name Bufo agua s.l. is in the synonymy of Bufo marinus (e.g., see Frost, 2002), but most if not all of Wied’s
observations were made within the range of Bufo ictericus .
Wied was impressed by the giant toads and preserved some, but he mentions losing specimens on page 554 of the Beitra¨ge. No South American Bufo species currently exists in Prince Maximilian’s collection and only one (see Bufo ornatus below) is mentioned in his 1860 manuscript catalog.
