Diagnosis ( Figs 81 View FIGURES 78–83 , 94 View FIGURES 91–96 , 100 View FIGURES 97–102 ). Amblycerus schwarzi is characterized by the following combination of characters: eyes strongly prominent laterally, closer to each other anteriorly, ocular index: 10.0; pronotum and elytra covered with grayish setae; metepisternum with coarse, conspicuous punctures; hind tibia with lateral spur about 3.0 longer than median spur, tarsomere I about 4.8 times the length of median spur; pygidium with coarse and sparse punctures ( Fig. 81 View FIGURES 78–83 ); male genitalia, internal sac in the apical region with one pair of subcylindrical sclerites ( Fig. 94 View FIGURES 91–96 ). Amblycerus schwarzi is very similar externally and in relation to the genitalia to A. dispar , as both have eyes close anteriorly ( Figs 23, 25 View FIGURES 22–27 ) and median lobe with dorsal valve ( Figs 92, 94 View FIGURES 91–96 ) subtriangular and internal sac with unpaired “J sclerites. Amblycerus dispar differs from A. schwarzi by the presence of frontal carina (absent in A. schwarzi ), cervical boss with three setae (two setae in A. schwarzi ), metaventrite with median sulcus longer than a half the length of metaventrite (about half the length of metaventrite in A. schwarzi ), ventrite V almost as long as ventrite IV (almost twice as long as the ventrite IV in A. schwarzi ) and internal sac of male genitalia without pair of sclerite in the apical region (one pair in A. schwarzi ).

Distribution ( Fig. 118 View FIGURES 117–118 ). United States, Virgin Islands, Grand Cayman Island, Bahamas (new country record), Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic (new country record), Jamaica, Curaçao and Saint Croix.

Life History. According to Kingsolver (1970), the wide distribution and host diversity of A. schwarzi indicates a high degree of adaptability and probably a high rate of anthropic introduction. One noteworthy fact is that among the genera of plants consumed by A. schwarzi , the seeds of Hippomane and Ricinus are poisonous to warm-blooded animals.

Host Plants ( Tab. I View TABLE I ). Combretaceae : Terminalia catappa L. Euphorbiaceae : Hippomane mancinella L., Ricinus communis L. Verbenaceae : Tectona grandis L. Rubiaceae : Guettarda sp., Randia aculeata var. aculeata .
