Diagnostic characters. Stems clustered, erect, 1.5–2.5 m long; internodes 7–8 cm long and 2–2.5 cm in diam- eter. Leaf pinnate, ca 1.1 m long; crownshaft 25–38 cm long, indumentums brown; petiole 15–22 cm long. Leaf- lets 9–13 per side, 32–43 cm long, 6–8 cm wide, alter- nate, lanceolate, entire, acuminate, basal leaflets with 2 or 3 veins; terminal leaflets connate, ca 30 cm long, 5–12 cm wide, veins 5 or 6. Inflorescence 22–28 cm long; ra- chis 4–5 cm long; rachillae 2–4 in number, 19–24 cm

long. Fruits ellipsoid, arrangement in three directions, ca 1.7 cm long.

Flowering and fruiting. September and November to February, respectively.

Distribution. Cachar and Tinsukia districts; in shaded hilly areas.

Vernacular names. Geruga Tamul (Assamese).

Uses. As masticator (fruit).
