Stenopsoides truncatus Semeraro View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 1C,G,K View FIGURE 1 , 5A–E View FIGURE 5 , 6 View FIGURE 6 )

Description. Body length 6.2 mm (n=1). General colour yellow with some orange. Face with frontoclypeus, an- teclypeus, lorum and gena beneath eyes, reddish/ orange. Pronotal tubular extension yellow/ orange dorsally, with brown coarse pitting medially; calli yellow (distinct); mesonotum yellow, scutellum slightly orange. Tegmen transparent but costal cell dark yellow, translucent, orange at base; veins yellow. Legs mostly dark yellow, with posterior face of tibia orange.

Head. ( Figs 1C,G,K View FIGURE 1 , 5A,C,D View FIGURE 5 ) Distance between coronal pits equal to inter-ocellar distance; inter-ocellar distance around 2 times ocellar-ocular distance, ocellus about same distance from eye compared to midline of face; frontoclypeus width 0.7 times width of face between eyes; lorum wider than long; maxillary plate narrowly visible posterior to lorum; anteclypeus slightly flexed mesad, constricted preapically, expanded apically, slight notch medially along apical margin.

Thorax. ( Figs 1C,K View FIGURE 1 , 5A,B,C View FIGURE 5 ) Pronotal tubular extension constricted at base and parallel-sided, truncate at apex; extension directed dorsad; mostly rugose with reddish brown pitting, posterior portion of pronotum with definite but fine transverse striations; no distinct medial ridge visible dorsally but slight ridge ventrally. Mesonotum + scutellum with only very fine concolorous pitting, width across base of mesonotum 1.2 times length of mesonotum + scutellum. Tegmen length 3.2 times its width. A few brown dots at the base of costal cell. Legs metafemur with apical setal formula 2+1+0; metatibia with 7–8 macrosetae on anterodorsal margin; 3–4 fine setae on anterior face of metatibia (n=1).

Abdomen. ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ) Female seventh sternite (7S) shape as in generic description, broadly concave along posterior margin, width around 2.5 times maximum height. Ovipositor apex not protruding, slightly short of pygofer apex in ventral view.

Etymology. This species epithet “ truncatus ” is a Latin adjective meaning truncate and it refers to the shape of the pronotal extension which appears somewhat truncate at the apex.

Type material. HOLOTYPE, ♀, AUSTRALIA: Western Australia, 35 km NW Bandya Station , 23.ix.1986., K.T. Richards ( WADA 17760 View Materials ).

For this specimen the following coordinates: 27°28’14”S, 121°53’32”E were extrapolated from the data on the label and used in the distribution map.

Distribution. Western Australia ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ).

Host. Unknown.

Differential diagnosis. Stenopsoides truncatus Semeraro sp. nov. is most similar in appearance to S. newi Semeraro sp. nov. in colouration, being mostly yellow with orange on face, legs and base of tegmen but is distinguished by being slightly smaller in body length. It differs from all other species in the shape of the pronotal extension, being more constricted at the base, with parallel lateral margins (when viewed dorsally), and being truncate at the apex (the pronotum is either tapering to a rounded apex or enlarged and dorsoventrally flattened in the other species). It is similar to S. newi Semeraro sp. nov., in having no brown dots on the tegmen while S. punctatus Semeraro sp. nov. has brown dots evenly over tegmen and S. turneri has dots only in the costal cells.
