scientific name

Scapania undulata (L.) Dumort.
status

Jungermannia undulata Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 1132. 1753.

"Habitat in Europa." RCN: 8117.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Vaillant, Bot. Paris.: 98, t. 19, f. 6. 1727; [icon] in Dillenius, Hist. Musc.: 490, t. 71, f. 17. 1741.

Current name: Scapania undulata (L.) Dumort. ( Scapaniaceae ).

Note: Grolle & al. (in Taxon 54: 508. 2005) claimed that the cited Dillenius figure had been previously designated as the lectotype by Grolle (in Taxon 22: 691. 1973; Feddes Repert. 87: 236. 1976). However, although linked with the published figure, Grolle in both publications clearly treats the herbarium material in OXF as the lectotype. As this material was not studied by Linnaeus, it is not original material for the name. Although Grolle & al. clearly accept Dillenius’ figure as the type (and the voucher material in OXF as an epitype), their statement was published after 1 Jan 2001 and so the omission of the phrase "designated here" or an equivalent (Art. 7.11) means that their lectotype choice is not effective and, in the absence of a lectotype, an epitype cannot be designated. The material in OXF is not original for the name, and the name remains untypified at present.
