Endemic to the Atlantic Forest ( Sobral et al. 2009) from the northeast to south regions of Brazil ( Sobral et al. 2010). In the Northeast, it is cited from the States of Bahia ( Sobral et al. 2010). New records of this species for State of Pernambuco are presented here. This species is considered extinct in the State of Pernambuco, with no records in the last 60 years.
Trees 6–12 m tall. This species differs from Marlierea excoriata by having larger leaves (30–40 × 10–13 cm) and pilose fruit; it differs from other Myrcia species by having the calyx closed in the bud, tearing open irregularly.
