In tropical America, this species occurs from Mexico to Argentina and is widely distributed in Brazil ( Govaerts et al. 2010; Sobral et al. 2010).
Trees and shrubs 3–7 m tall. Morphologicaly similar to Myrcia sylvatica but differs by having elliptic leaves and a flat or raised midvein on the adaxial lamina surface; it differs from other Myrcia species by having a pilose hypanthium and style and by having ellipsoid fruit.
