Only two species of the Afrotropical genus Paramyopa are currently accepted as valid, comprising Paramyopa oestracea ( Loew, 1863) and Paramyopa insignis ( Jaennicke, 1867) . Kröber (1916a) redescribed the holotype of Paramyopa insignis and erected the genus Paramyopa , with Paramyopa insignis as its type species. The type and the only known specimen of Paramyopa insignis should be in the Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Senckenberg ( Germany, Frankfurt, SMFD) but is now seemingly lost (Rademacher in litt.) and therefore no extant specimens of Paramyopa insignis are known. According to the redescription of Kröber (1916a), however, the species can be separated by the characters summarised in the key below.
