16. Yponomeuta zambesica sp. nov.
Description of adult ( Plate 3). Wingspan 24–26 mm. Head ochreous white, a black spot behind; labial palpus slender, dirty white, blackish on joints. Thorax pale grey with black spots, tegula concolorous with one black spot. Forewing grey, a scattering of small white dots, a pair of black spots at base, a second subbasal pair 3–5 further black spots along costa, two black spots in fold, a further pair of black spots towards apex, one at tornus and a row of smaller spots along termen; fringe grey. Hindwing grey, a shade darker than forewing. Abdomen grey.
Male genitalia ( Plate 10). Uncus square, socius long and slightly curved, apex with curved point, valva almost semicircular with costa nearly straight, saccus about half length of valva. Aedeagus gently curved, about twice as long as valva, two cornuti almost half length of aedeagus. Sternum 7 with middle of proximal edge drawn out into a triangle.
Female genitalia ( Plate 20 View PLATE 20 ). Lamella postvaginalis lobes forming an obtuse angle in the middle, curved towards the outer edge, antrum in the shape of a narrow cone, slightly bulbous near ostium, ductus bursae moderately wide with a scobinate longitudinal band, about ¾ length of abdomen; corpus bursae a small sphere, signum an ovate spinose patch.
Diagnosis: Differs from other species with grey forewings in the distinctive subbasal spots on costa and beneath it, also a conspicuous black spot in the termen. The aedeagus with two strong cornuti is diagnostic and in the female the characteristic shape of the lamella postvaginalis lobes.
